When you make the decision to have a child you almost never expect the road to parenthood to be difficult.

However, 1 in 6 couples in Australia are experiencing fertility issues due to various factors, many of which are medically unexplained.

Whether you decide to conceive naturally or go ahead with assisted reproduction technologies (ART) you have an opportunity to improve your own health prior to conception.

Preconception care is vital to help improve your overall health and assure the best possible health of your future child. And this applies to both males and females.

Since implementing changes to my own life (We are trying to conceive this year & I’m 40) I feel so much more optimistic, healthier and stronger as a result. And this alone is a success for me.

Let me ask you this?

Do you understand what preconception care truly means?

Standard medical recommendation looks something like this; take some folic acid, don’t smoke, don’t drink or take drugs, don’t have too much caffeine and hope for the best.

The reality is that most couples, especially those over the age of 35 need to do much more in order to conceive and sustain a healthy pregnancy. And if you truly care about the health of your future baby, take charge of your own health prior to conception and beyond.

From my experience coupled with over a decade of work in the field of natural therapies, I know that optimising emotional, spiritual & mental health, optimising nutritional status and exercise, in many cases incorporating optimal supplementation, minimising toxic exposure and addressing the adverse effects of stress can significantly enhance the chances of a healthy pregnancy.

Although I can never guarantee pregnancy as an outcome (in fact no medical profession can either), I can guarantee that if you do implement positive changes in all of the above areas of your life, you become much healthier and a more positive person as a result.

Most healthy pregnancies occur, on average, 6-8 months after implementing healthy changes to diet and lifestyle. Recent study by Stanford University says that follicles that are producing the eggs harvested for IVF can take up to 8 menstrual cycles to develop, with the last 3 months being governed by the reproductive system. So it makes perfect sense to take time to prepare and enhance your overall health, whether you choose natural conception or ART.

This conscious preparation can truly increase the possibility of a healthy pregnancy

It’s generally recommended to start preparing your body at least 3-4 months prior to conception, however from a holistic perspective it’s best if you can start 6-12 months before conception, especially if you or your partner have been diagnosed with any medical condition.

I love nothing more than empowering couples to make the best possible choices for themselves, so they never have to live with regret that they haven’t done enough.

Amy and her partner have been trying to conceive for around 2 years

Amy & her partner decided to implement my dietary and lifestyle recommendations and 8 months later they conceived. Amy has a healthy pregnancy and she is due to deliver in few weeks' time. I can’t wait to welcome their little angel to this world.

Whether you’ve just made the decision to have babies or you have been on this journey for a while, addressing all areas of your life can make a real difference.

Don’t wait any longer; take daily action towards achieving your baby dreams and if you need to reach out for help!

And here is my last recommendation and one of the most important ones I share in my preconception care program; be kind and gentle to yourself and incorporate plenty of regular self care, fun and play into your life.

All my love,

Erika xx
